In 1989 a small Hospice, now know as St. John's House, was opened in what had been St. John of God Private Hospital in Courtenay Hill, Newry. This service has developed extensively over the past 16 years and is now called the Southern Area Hospice Service, providing a specialist care service for terminally ill patients including children, throughout Armagh, Newry, Portadown, Lurgan and Dungannon areas and their hinterlands. Patients and their families are provided with specialist care and supported by a dedicated team in their area.

Southern Area Hospice Services aims to alleviate the suffering of terminally ill patients by providing palliative care and pain relief. Care is provided free, either in the home, hospital or in the hospice in-patient unit and responds to the physical, psychological and spiritual needs of patients with the highest standards of medical and nursing care, irrespective of religious conviction, race, or financial means.
The aim of our hospice is to provide an integrated care service that will respond to the needs of each individual patient with the objective of reaching the best quality of life for that patient.
